Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some frequently asked questions about our space and our programs. Have a question not listed below? Send us an email to ask: skillset@unca.edu
What is the best way for me to find out when new programs are available?
Sign up for our newsletter! (Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and add your email!) We send out notifications when new programs are added, and when registration goes live.
We also use Instagram and Facebook to announce news, advertise classes, feature projects, and show off the cool things we’re up to!
How do I register for a class?
We are currently in the process of moving our registration system to Eventbrite. To register for programs not yet listed on Eventbrite, please email skillset@unca.edu to get started.
You will receive a reminder email shortly before the class starts with next steps.
How do I pay for my class?
For workshops not listed on Eventbrite, payments are processed in person on the day of class. We accept cash, checks, and credit cards.
Where is SkillSet located?
SkillSet is located inside the UNC Asheville STEAM Studio, at the Ramp Studios 821 Riverside Drive, Asheville. We’re in Suite #140, on the side of the building that is opposite the French Broad Chocolate Factory and Cafe, and behind the Blue Ridge Sign Supply. The entrance is at the north end of Building C (821 Riverside), in the alley next to Blue Ridge Sign Supply.
Is the door locked? It’s okay! Check your email for the phone of your lead instructor and give us a call. We’re probably looking for you also!
Where do I park?
Here are a few options:
The closest parking is located behind the Ramp Studios North Building (corner of Broadway and Riverside). Enter the lot using the alley on Riverside Drive between the Ramp Studios North Building and the Blue Ridge Sign Supply.
Parking also available in the lot for Cheap Joes Art Supply and Ginger’s Revenge on the corner of Broadway and Riverside.
Parking also available at the opposite end of the Ramp Studios, in front of the French Broad Chocolate Factory and Cafe.
Parking also available along Riverside Drive, parallel to the Ramp Studios building (pay close attention to signage, as there are some no parking sections).
What should I wear to my class?
* Closed heel and closed toe shoes.
* No loose accessories or items of clothing eg hoodie straps, long necklaces,
headphone wires, hair ribbons, scarves.
* Long hair must be tied back.
* Clothes may get dirty or dusty, so please plan accordingly.
Do you provide safety glasses or should I bring my own?
We do have safety glasses and ear muffs or plugs for you to borrow!
However, everyone’s face is shaped differently, there are many different brands and shapes (ones that fit over your prescription lens, made small for small faces, or have other awesome features). It’s well worth the investment to acquire your very own safety gear that fits you well and is comfortable for long periods of time.
Safety glasses are relatively inexpensive, and can be found at many big box and local hardware stores. Look for glasses marked “Z87” somewhere on the lens or stems to be sure they are impact resistant.
For earplugs or earmuffs, look for noise reduction ratings (NRR) in the high 20s to mid 30s. The higher the number, the more noise reduction. Ear protection should be comfortable for your body, so sometimes finding the right fit takes some trial and error.

What tools will I get to use?
This depends on the class you’re taking!
Our studio has hundreds of different types of tools and your instructors have carefully curated the class experience for you. Check our after-school, summer camp, or adult workshop pages for more information on the individual classes. The class pages list a ton of information, including learning outcomes, the different tools specific to different classes, and even information about your instructors.
Can boys enroll in the afterschool program / summer camps?
Yes, boys have enrolled in our classes / camps in the past.
We ask that boys considering the program understand that they are entering a program that was established to address historical inequalities faced by girls and non-binary kids in access to tools and trade skills, and that many of the instructors are women and non-binary. SkillSet welcomes students of all genders to come learn with us.
How else can I support this project?
Wow, what an amazing question – thank you for asking!
There are many ways to support this important work. Monetary donations can go a long way, and help us offset operating costs so that we can provide more income-based and scholarship-driven opportunities for individuals in need of financial assistance. We also accept donations of building materials, bulk snacks, and tools.
Please check out our Support page for more information, or email skillset@unca.edu with specific questions.
